Citizen to Provide Information on Overhead Helicopter Activities / The Helicopter Tracker is on its Way

Citizen, the application that empowers every user to report crime, is now extending its capabilities to monitor helicopters. The company declared today that it’s incorporating a helicopter tracking feature into the app, which will provide users with reasons for the presence of airborne vehicles above them.

The team informed The Verge that they utilize a dedicated 24/7 group to scrutinize 911 transmissions, and now they’ll also examine data related to police helicopters. Similar to other information on Citizen, users can contribute their own videos and comments about an incident while Citizen conducts verification on its side. When feasible, the team will append a “related incident” to a helicopter sighting that provides more context to the situation. Thus, if the helicopter is linked to a missing person report, for instance, that report will be associated.

The helicopter tracking feature is the newest addition to Citizen’s suite of tools, as it strives to be the go-to platform for all local crime information. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, it integrated an in-app contact tracing tool, and according to the company, it has garnered over 7 million registrations since its inception in 2017.
